Stand
Down For the Homeless, September 30, 2008
On September 30, the HSC participated in the Savannah program to
support and provide assistance for the homeless in our area; many
of whom are veterans. "Stand Down" is a military term,
which describes soldiers taking care of other soldiers in a safe
and secure place. It became an event for homeless veterans in 1988
in San Diego, California, but is now held in many cities across
the nation. Providers in the community feel that it was a an important
part of building a strong referral base. The program includes breakfast,
lunch, haircuts, showers, and new clothes and blankets for those
in need in Savannah. There was also a small expo with several programs
represented to provide job and health information, and education
opportunities designed to help break the cycle of homelessness.
The Spouses' Club was on hand to help prepare and serve lunch to
over 300 visitors (and one very nice dog) at the Bee Street center.
All of the HSC participants were honored and humbled to be able
to help, and hanging out in the kitchen was a great treat for all
of us.
